Moving from Cape Town to Pretoria: A Family’s Guide to a Stress-Free Move
Moving to a new city can be exciting but managing the process while balancing work and family responsibilities can quickly become overwhelming. For families relocating across South Africa, having a clear plan and the right moving company can make all the difference.
When a New Job Means a New Home
Thandeka, 36, is a marketing manager, while her husband, Musa, 39, works as a senior software engineer. Like many professionals, the couple embraced remote work in 2020 and decided to semi-grate from Pretoria to Langebaan to enjoy a quieter lifestyle.
After welcoming their three-year-old daughter, Lerato, they had even more reason to enjoy life near the coast. However, in 2026 when Thandeka’s company asked her to return to its Pretoria head office full-time, the family had to prepare for another move.
“I was excited about the move, but managing a full house, a demanding job and a tween felt like a lot. Finding a mover who’d take care of the process was my main priority,” Thandeka explains.
Step 1: Request a Moving Quote
After discovering Stuttaford Van Lines through an Instagram post, Thandeka visited the profile and requested a free moving quote via their website.
Elkhe, from the Stuttaford Van Lines sales executive team contacted her and arranged a free home survey. During the visit, Elkhe assessed the property access and concluded that the house is free-standing and has enough space for the Stuttaford Van Lines truck, before heading inside to assess the family’s belongings, including their beds, lounge furniture, kitchen appliances, television and household essentials.
Below is a detailed inventory list prepared by the sales executive during the free survey:
Inventory list:
| Kitchen | Quantity |
| Fridge | 1 |
| Microwave | 1 |
| Top loader washing machine | 1 |
| Dinner set | 24 |
| Cutlery | 20 |
| Set of pots and pans | 3 pans & pots |
| 1.7L kettle | 1 |
| Dustbin 50ml | 2 |
| Mugs | 6 |
| Wine glasses | 4 |
| Water glasses | 6 |
| Lounge Furniture | Quantity |
| 2 seater couch | 1 |
| Small coffee table | 1 |
| Medium sized rug | 2 |
| Living room curtains | 5 |
| Bedroom | Quantity |
| Single bed (second bedroom) | 1 |
| Queen bed (master bedroom) | 1 |
| Small side table | 1 |
| Ottoman | 2 |
| Wooden headboard | 1 |
| Large rug | 2 |
| Bedroom curtains | 4 |
| Laundry basket | 2 |
This helps Stuttaford Van Lines to estimate the volume of their belongings and provide a quote suited to the family’s needs.
Step 2: Choose the Right Moving Services
Following the survey, the sales executive explained the moving process, discussed insurance options and provided a detailed quote.
Thandeka and Musa decided to insure their belongings against unforeseen incidents during transit. They also learned about groupage, an option that allows customers to share truck space with other moves travelling in a similar direction.
Based on the family’s inventory, their belongings will take up approximately 10 cubic metres of space. The move from Cape Town to Pretoria will cost R9,545 (incl. VAT), using a shared truck to help keep transport costs down. Packing costs R2,530 (incl. VAT), covering boxes and protective wrapping for selected appliances, furniture, rugs and beds. Insurance is also available at 2.85% of the total replacement value of their belongings, providing extra peace of mind during the move.
Step 3: Prepare for Moving Day
Once the couple accepted the quote and confirmed their moving date, the sales executive, Elkhe kept them informed about the arrangements.
On moving day, a team of six arrived with the necessary packing materials, including boxes, bubble wrap, protective wrapping, linen boxes, clothing hanging boxes, and tape.
The moving coordinator introduced the team and checked the inventory before work began. Kitchen items were packed securely, belongings were organised into boxes, and the furniture was wrapped for protection.
The team carefully loaded the belongings onto the truck, using protective blankets to help prevent damage during transit.
Step 4: Have a Backup Plan
Just as the family prepared to leave Langebaan, an unexpected problem arose. Their estate agent informed them that their new home in Pretoria was not ready because of a power failure that required urgent repairs. Technicians estimated that the work would take five days.
With their belongings already packed for the move, Thandeka and Musa needed an alternative arrangement. They contacted Stuttaford Van Lines to organise short-term storage in Johannesburg while the family stayed with Musa’s brother.
Elkhe explained to Thandeka and Musa that their storage cost will be based on the volume of their items per week and not on a flat rate to ensure that all customers are given a tailor-made quote.

Thandeka and Musa’s experience shows that even a well-planned move can come with unexpected challenges. Start by requesting a detailed quote, an inventory list and choosing a reliable moving company that communicates clearly and offers the services you need.
